Yes, it’s what we call the “Shoulder Season” so things  are "supposed to be" a little slow, but you wouldn't know- it’s Aspen, Colorado and there's a lot going on.

If you are not familiar with this site, each week I take a look at events and happenings in The Valley and choose three things that look adventurous from Aspen down to Glenwood Springs. Here are my picks of the week:  Seth Glier @ Wheeler Opera House, Basalt's new "The Temporary" and Carbondale's First Friday, Dia De Los Muertos.

Aspen: Seth Glier @ Wheeler Opera House  |  Saturday, November 4, 2017 @ 6:30 PM
Wheeler Opera House:

Despite his relatively young age, recording artist Seth Glier (pronounced Gleer) is a seasoned troubadour. A singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who averages over 250 live performances annually, Seth has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows and playing major festivals. He’s shared the stage with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Edwin McCain, Martin Sexton, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams, and has quickly become known for his passionate live sets and powerful command of both piano and guitar.

No stranger to Aspen audiences, Glier has performed at the Wheeler multiple times before, including a guest performance with “American Idol” favorite Crystal Bowersox last year. Glier’s latest album, “Birds,” was released on August 25, 2017.

Cost: $25.00 or Pick 3 for $60.00

Some Accolades:

“Grammy-nominated musician Seth Glier continues to gain momentum” – Paste Magazine

“Singer with an exquisite tenor echoes Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel.” – USA TODAY

“this material sounds like nothing if not classics in waiting…it’s the essence of perfection” – BLURT Magazine

“this young blood wields an old-soul air…Discover a new generation of great with Seth Glier’s ‘The Next Right Thing'” – Huffington Post

“An adept song craftsman elegantly emotional vocalist…harkening back to early pop/rock tradition of Billy Joel and early Springsteen.” – iTunes Editorial

Basalt: Honky Tonkin’ With Casey James prestwood and the Burning Angels @ The Temporary  |  Friday, November 3, 2017 @ 8 - 10 PM

Get on yer dancin boots and head on over to The Temporary to enjoy some honky tonk with Casey James prestwood and the Burning Angels.

If the late night scene on Broadway Street in Nashville, Tennessee could talk, they'd sing you a Casey James Prestwood tune. Drenched in the honest twang that made Gram Parsons and Hank Williams household names, the classic crooner's carefree vocals and careful guitar playing feel more like country than a worn-in pair of cowboy boots.

The band was nominated as the Best Honky Tonk Group in the 2015 Ameripolitan Music Awards. Their new album, Born To Late, was recently released - head on over and boogie!

Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 PM.
Tickets: $10-$15.00

About The Temporary:
The Arts Campus at Willits (TACAW) is a 501c3 nonprofit entity whose mission is to further define the cultural identity of the Roaring Fork Valley by presenting performing, cinematic and culinary arts events. Currently, TACAW presents events at their interim home, The Temporary, in Willits. A permanent facility for the arts will be built in the coming years. The cultural acts presented by the organization are the culmination of decades of work to bring performing arts to the area.

When the Willits development of Basalt was conceived in the late 1990s, a multidisciplinary arts center that would benefit the community was included as part of the larger vision for the site. A parcel at the end of Market Street was set aside for the future construction of the center. This parcel was recently leased to TACAW for 99 years so they can begin to realize the promised center. After a long wait, the Arts Campus at Willits is finally here.

TACAW is a place for creative expression and community engagement. Collaborations with local nonprofits in which artistic programming is used to highlight their work are planned. Robust educational programming will ensure that students have the opportunity to find their own voice through the arts. These initiatives, coupled with compelling programming, will help TACAW create a community where the arts are celebrated and integrated into daily life.

Carbondale: It’s First Friday time!  Dia De Los Muertos @ The Third Street Center & Thunder River Theatre  |  Friday, November 3, 2017 @ 5 - 8 PM

As in true Carbondale fashion - there are lots of things going on for this First Friday!

The Thunder River Theatre, Carbondale Arts, Valley Settlement Project, Carbondale Creative District, and the Third Street Center are all working together to make the 13th Annual Dia De Los Muertos Celebration an incredibly inclusive community event during November’s First Friday in Carbondale on Nov. 3 from 5 to 8 pm.

This celebration combines music, dance, puppetry, storytelling, special foods and traditions together to honor those who have left us. Festivities start at 5 pm at the Third Street Center (TSC) for altar viewing, face painting, Mexican hot chocolate, and traditional treats.

At 6:15 pm, a procession begins at TSC concludes at the Thunder River Theatre for “Que Viva,” a ceremony honoring those who have left us.

Two viewings of Aspen Sante Fe Ballet Folklorico will take place at 7 pm and again at 7:45 pm at the Thunder River Theatre.   At these same times (7 pm & 7:45 pm), the puppet show “A Delfinita la Visita La Chokani / Delfinita Gets A Visit From La Chokani”  by Mexican Playwright Karmina L. Fanjúlby will be performed at The Launchpad by Carbondale’s El Colectivo.

Each of these activities are FREE to the community and costumes are encouraged! Bring your flashlights, candles, and glow sticks for the procession as it will be dark!

I wanted to ensure that other visitors to the valley could have one resource that has it all – dining, announcements, seasonal activities, cultural, entertainment, and more.  So I founded Around Aspen to help everyone find a great time in the Valley.
